Inspect the Door Frame:

Put on your safety glasses and check the door frame for any damage, warping or cracks to ensure it is sturdy and secure. If the frame is in poor condition, consider repairing or replacing it before proceeding.

Measure the Opening:

Accurate measurements are crucial. Use a measuring tape to measure the height, width and thickness of the existing door or the opening where the new door will be installed. Double-check your measurements to ensure a proper fit.

Prepare the New Door:

Measure your new door and compare it to the existing door or the opening where the new door will be installed. If your new door is slightly larger than the old door or opening, plane or sand it to match the required measurements.

Open the Old Door Fully:

To remove the old door, you’ll need to unscrew the hinges that attach the door to the door frame. Open the old door as widely as possible to give yourself clear access to the hinges.

Unscrew the Hinges:

Starting from the bottom, use a screwdriver or an electric drill with a screwdriver bit fitted to remove the screws that secure the bottom hinge to the door frame. Then unscrew the top hinge, but be careful as the door may be unstable once released from the hinges.  

Lift and Remove the Door:

With the help of a friend or a pry bar, gently lift the door off the hinges and set it aside.

Test Fit the New Door:

Place the new door in the opening to ensure it fits properly. Make any necessary adjustments.

Set the Door in Place:

Centre the door in the opening and use wedges to hold it in place. Use a level to ensure the door is sitting level and plumb with the door frame.

Secure the Hinges:

Attach the hinges to the door frame with screws, starting from the top hinge and working your way down. Once both hinges are securely fastened to the door frame, check that the door opens and closes smoothly.

Install the Lockset and Strike Plate:

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to install the lockset and strike plate. Ensure they are aligned properly for smooth operation.

Check the Door Function:

Open and close the door several times to ensure it operates smoothly and securely. Make any final adjustments as needed.
