Does My Window Need A Restriction?
In the first instance, please consult the AGWA guide here.

One crucial aspect of window safety is understanding when a window restriction is necessary to prevent falls. Based on the guidelines from the Australian Glass and Window Association (AGWA), here's a comprehensive guide to help you determine if your window needs a restriction.
Understanding the Need for Window Restrictions
The National Construction Code (NCC) specifies requirements to limit the risk of falls from openable windows, particularly focusing on preventing young children from falling.
Key Criteria for Window Restrictions
To determine if your window needs a restriction, consider the following criteria:
-
Fall Height:
- If the potential fall height is two metres or more in a bedroom, child care facility, or strata title unit in NSW, a restriction is required.
- For other rooms, a restriction is necessary if the fall height is four metres or more.
-
Window Opening Height:
- If the window opening is within 865 mm of the floor, a restriction is needed.
- For windows in bedrooms or child care facilities, if the opening is within 1700 mm of the floor, additional considerations apply.
-
Climbable Elements:
- If there are climbable elements (such as furniture or fixtures) between 150 mm and 760 mm above the floor, a restriction is required to prevent children from climbing and falling.
Types of Window Restrictions
The NCC provides two main options for window restrictions:
- Fixed Device: A device attached to the openable part of the window that restricts the opening so that a 125 mm sphere cannot pass through.
- Fixed Screen: A screen across the openable part of the window that meets the same restriction criteria.
Both options must resist an outward horizontal force of 250 N to ensure they provide adequate protection.
Child-Resistant and Permanent Restrictions
- Child-Resistant: These restrictions can be temporarily removed or overridden using a key, Allen key, screwdriver, spanner, or the coordinated use of two hands. This is permissible if the window opening is more than 865 mm from the floor and there are no climbable elements between 150 mm and 760 mm above the floor.
- Permanent: These restrictions are securely fixed in position and cannot be easily removed or overridden without tools like a drill.
Compliance and Verification
It is essential to ensure that any restriction device or screen meets the NCC requirements. The installer should verify compliance and provide evidence that the restriction can withstand the specified forces and meets the necessary safety standards.
In Summary
If you are unsure whether your window requires a restriction or not, please select 'Restricted' from the options on our website.
